Stage 1: Getting To Know Jesus Stage 1: Getting To Know Jesus Stage 1: Getting To Know Jesus

Episode 2: Jesus Came to You

Part 1: 999 Steps

The boat made its way to the shore, and there was already a mob of people waiting for Jesus to step off the boat. As he stepped ashore, the crowd gathered around him, welcoming him to their village. Up until this point, Jesus had been performing miracles, and huge crowds were following him. Word about Jesus spread quickly by word of mouth, and if Jesus was coming to your village, you would’ve known.

If this were modern times, Jesus would be shaking hands, signing autographs, and posing for selfies. Word spreads that Jesus has come to town, and the crowd grows heavier around him as he makes his way off the beach. Suddenly, the crowd parts and a man dressed in elaborate clothing stands before Jesus. His name is Jairus.

Jairus’ daughter was on the brink of death, and the doctors had done all that they could. Jesus was Jairus’ last hope. He had heard stories about Jesus’ miracles, so he went to him when he learned Jesus was in his village. Jairus fell at the feet of Jesus and begged him to come to heal his little girl. Being a leader in the community, Jairus was not one to plead at a man’s feet. People looked up to him, and now the entire community sees him on the ground pleading at a visitor’s feet.

This story is written in The Gospel of Mark Chapter 5. It doesn’t record anything about the conversation between the two, but Jesus went with Jairus. After they had walked a while, Jesus was interrupted by a sick woman (more on her in Part 2). While Jairus was impatiently waiting on Jesus, he received word that his daughter had died. It was at this time Jesus finished chatting with the woman, looked at Jairus, and said,

“Don’t be afraid, just believe.”

Jairus’ life had just fallen apart, but Jesus was right there with him.  Imagine the walk back to the house. Did Jairus want to break down and cry?  Did he get angry at Jesus for allowing him to get interrupted and not getting to his daughter in time?  Did he just want to run back to the house?  Whatever emotions Jairus was going through, Jesus stayed right beside him.  When Jesus arrived at Jairus’ house, he performed the miracle of all miracles.  He brings her back to life.

Jairus’ short journey with Jesus is a great example of how our lives go with him. He comes into our world. We ask him to walk with us, and no matter how that walk goes, Jesus is always there. It doesn’t matter the ups and downs life will take you through; Jesus will walk with you.

The miracle of Jairus’ daughter being raised from the dead did not start with Jairus walking to that beach to ask for Jesus’ help.  It started because Jesus made his way across the sea to Jairus.

“If there are a thousand steps between us and (Jesus), He will take all but one. He will leave the final one for us. The choice is ours.” “If there are a thousand steps between us and (Jesus), He will take all but one. He will leave the final one for us. The choice is ours.” “If there are a thousand steps between us and (Jesus), He will take all but one. He will leave the final one for us. The choice is ours.”

- Max Lucado

You made that one step when you asked Jesus to come into your life.  He took all those remaining steps toward you.
